What made you decide to install microlocs?
I like being a get up and go person. I got so tired of thinking about what to do with my hair— braids, wigs, managing my afro. Wash days were also a terror. I’d spend so long detangling, washing, deep conditioning, steaming, and it always hurt whenever I’d go to a salon (my scalp is VERY tender). My job is very demanding and my hair took up too much time and mindshare. I do miss my afro and loose hair sometimes, but this has been so worth it.
What do you love most about your locs and why?
I love that I can get up, spritz, and go daily, and that they can be very versatile when I decide to spend more time on them.
What has been the biggest challenge or adjustment?
Getting into a retightening schedule and sticking to it.
What’s something you wish you knew before getting loc’d?
Sometimes I wish I did a bit more research. Not that it necessarily would have impacted the outcome, but sometimes I go back and forth wondering if I would love my locs more if they were tinier (probably not because that would mean more time spent retightening) or if I loc’d them using a different method (e.g. twists). I didn’t even know that was a thing back in 2022.
What advice would you give someone considering installing Sisterlocks or microlocs?
Do it! Haha but I guess more seriously, do the research. I feel like there are so many types of locs and ways to start locs, something new pops up everyday. So get to know what exactly you want, and get someone experienced to get it done after a detailed and personalized consultation.
Shout out your loctician! Who does your reties?
