What made you decide to install microlocs?

I had been natural for almost 10 years, and loved it, but was also burnt out! Tired of all the things I felt I had to do to maintain the health and length of my hair. My mum and sister are also loc’d, and inspired me with their beautiful hair, length retention and easy hair care!

What was your go-to-hairstyle when you first got your locs installed?

Braid out! I would braid and band my locs when washing, then have a lovely braid out at the end. As someone who made wigs and did wigs as my side hustle for a few years, I also a loved wigs and would use those too.

How do you maintain your locs and what products do you use regularly?

I keep it simple! I just use shampoo on my locs and do the occasional ACV rinse. I may introduce oils when my locs are more mature. But they are doing great with simplicity.

What do you love most about your locs and why?

As I said, I often wore protective styles as a natural and felt the need to do this to be “presentable”. But locs are always ready to go! I also love how versatile microlocs are… the styling options are endless!

What has been the biggest challenge or adjustment?

I think the biggest challenge was installing my locs myself! Interlocking 16 inches of hair whilst caring for my 2.5 year old & newborn. 😭

What’s something you wish you knew before getting loc’d?

It’s never too early to protect your locs from lint. Wrap your locs up / wear a bonnet! You won’t notice lint in your hair at first, but once you do, it’s already too late!

What advice would you give someone considering installing Sisterlocks or microlocs?

Research, know what you want, (e.g. the different ways to start locs, how locs mature depending on the method you start with, retie methods, loc sizes / number of locs you want). Trust the process.

Shout out your loctician! Who does your reties?

Me! I’m not a loctician but I have always had a passion for hair, and have always done my own hair (and others).
