Microlocs Establishment Date: 11/21/2023
I did my own DIY microlocs on 21-11-2023 and finished them three days later. That was just my natural hair. A few days after Christmas that same year, I decided to add extensions (16 inches from QVRHair). I realized that I made my extensions too thick, so I redid them over a three-week span from February to March (yes, I know, a very rocky ride, but we’re here!).
Number of Locs: 243 locs!
Microlocs Installation Location: I did them myself at home.

How would you describe your hair prior to getting locs (natural, 4b, fine, dense, etc.)?
My loose natural hair was collarbone length 4c hair, high porosity. I would not say thick, but also not fine. If there was a shrinkage competition, I would 100% win!!
What made you decide to install microlocs?
Microlocs, for me personally, became the key to letting go of all the standards that society had imposed on me and us, Black girls. “You are only pretty if…” “Your natural hair is only pretty if…” “I only think you look professional if…” But no more. I was so done with all these conditions. I want to be loved and treated with respect unconditionally, but I need to start with myself. I have never felt so free—free from worries about my next hairstyle, free from worrying about what others might think, and free from restricting myself. No more fear of getting my hair wet, messing up my edges, or worrying about my hair shrinking.
What was your go-to-hairstyle when you first got your locs installed?
I rocked the two ponytails EVERY day!!
How do you maintain your locs and what products do you use regularly?
I love to use my DIY loc spray! It has rosemary/thyme water and vegetable glycerin. Next to that, I use my DIY hair oil made with rosemary oil, tonka oil, lavender oil, and jojoba oil.
What do you love most about your locs and why?
The freedom is AMAZING! I love that I’m not living my life around my hair anymore.
What has been the biggest challenge or adjustment?
Limiting hair products and leaving my hair alone has been an adjustment. I am so used to switching my hair up, but honestly, I’ve learned that less is sometimes more.
What’s something you wish you knew before getting loc’d?
I wish someone had told me that locs are so versatile because I would have started my locs years ago.
What advice would you give someone considering installing Sisterlocks or microlocs?
This is something that I really considered knowing that I was about to maintain my own microlocs... The number of locs that you install is also the number of locs that you need to retie. Think about that before you install your locs.
