Describe your hair before getting microlocs.

Natural, healthy, shoulder-length.

What hairstyles did you used to wear the most before getting microlocs?

Braids!

The decision to install my locs felt like a perfect hybrid, the best of both worlds. I get to enjoy my natural hair whilst still having that braided, styled feeling I loved so much.

What made you decide to install microlocs?

I LOVED braids, I think I was the queen of them in fact! But they were really beginning to impact my edges and so the solution many people told me, trichologists included, was for me to stop braiding altogether.

I loved my natural hair so initially I didn't think this would bother me but after a while, it became tedious to have my natural hair out all of the time. During those tedious moments, I often turned to mini twists - especially during the pandemic - so I was subconsciously making the transition to a locked life, I just didn't realise it.

Then one day, I remember coming back from a trip and seeing a family friend who has had Sisterlocks since childhood. I was so in awe, I asked her mum (who installed mine) when she could come and do mine - she was back at my house within a few days!

What’s your go-to-hairstyle?

Left side parting!

How do you maintain your locs and what products do you use regularly?

Reties - every 5 weeks.

Wash - every 2 weeks.

Favourite Products - Nizoral / Ketoconazole, I really struggled with scalp eczema, but this has helped so much!

What do you love most about your locs and why?

  1. The ease - I can literally always just get up and go with minimal effort.

  2. The fact that they have made me feel my most beautiful everyday and on every occasion.

  3. The way that they grow so quickly but silently!

What has been the biggest challenge or adjustment?

Going from being very diligent about hair oils and products to being told, “you only need shampoo,” that was a real adjustment in the beginning, but I made it through and now I incorporate a few old things from time to time.

What’s something you wish you knew before getting loc’d?

To always wear a shower cap! Locs are like sponges, you don't want to risk water logged locs which can lead to a whole range of hair and scalp issues!

What advice would you give someone considering installing Sisterlocks or microlocs?

Enjoy the whole journey! In my opinion there is no “ugly stage.” I really think this journey taught me to love myself at every stage. When I installed them, because of the concept of permanence with locs, I felt locked in (pun intended) so whenever I felt insecure about my hair, or my look or felt inferior compared to women with braids and weaves, etc., I had no choice but to keep going because hey, locs are permanent. And honestly, that's what really pushed me to be even more confident in who I am, in all my forms, at every stage of my being.

Shout out your loctician! Who does your reties today?
