Describe your hair before getting microlocs.

I was natural at the time of getting my locs installed. I had about 15 inches of hair. It had gotten really healthy during the pandemic because I didn’t manipulate it a lot but then after everything opened back up, I started doing a lot of protective styles that actually started to thin my hair because of the amount of blow drying intention I was putting on it.

What hairstyles did you used to wear the most before getting microlocs?

Long synthetic, twists or faux locs.

Honestly, I don’t have any real challenges. My quality of life has increased greatly since installing them. There’s nothing that I face with microlocs that’s even remotely as challenging as having loose natural hair. I have loved my locs since the day they were installed.

What made you decide to install microlocs?

I was tired of doing my hair. My hair has always been a bit of a beast to manage. And I never had the time or the energy. Plus my hair is very frizzy so almost no natural styles lasted long.

What’s your go-to-hairstyle?

Braid out is always my go to! I don’t even have to do anything with it after it’s curly the style by itself is so cute.

How do you maintain your locs and what products do you use regularly?

I typically wash my hair once a week. My routine is pretty basic. I use Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo from Trader Joe’s because it’s clarifying and cheap and I use hair oil from a small Black-owned business, @unrulyjewelry. I also spray it with rosewater from Trader Joe’s for added moisture. I get a retie every 5 to 6 weeks.

What do you love most about your locs and why?

I love the versatility and the easy maintenance.

What has been the biggest challenge or adjustment?

Honestly, I don’t have any real challenges. My quality of life has increased greatly since installing them. There’s nothing that I face with microlocs that’s even remotely as challenging as having loose natural hair. I have loved my locs since the day they were installed. I guess if I had to name something, it’s finding new hairstyles as my hair grows. Because the pineapples just aren’t hitting the same anymore!

What’s something you wish you knew before getting loc’d?

I wish I knew that just because I was starting with 15 inches of hair did not mean I was going to have 15 inch locs. It seems like common sense now that I understand the process, but when my hair shrunk above my shoulders, I was shocked!

What advice would you give someone considering installing Sisterlocks or microlocs?

I would say if you’re thinking about it and have been thinking about it for a long time, just do it! The time I’ve gotten back in my life from no longer having to deal with 12 hour wash days has been incredible. I don’t know anyone who regrets their decision.

Shout out your loctician! Who does your reties today?

My loctician is LaTonia @goldielocsllc on Instagram.
