Describe your hair before getting microlocs.
Loose natural, short length as my hair was growing out from a tapered fade cut.
What hairstyles did you used to wear the most before getting microlocs?
Braids, wigs, various styles with my natural hair.
“The loc journey is such a beautiful, holistic experience, it’s about more than just hair. It’s growth, patience, freedom, and self-acceptance all in one.”
What made you decide to install microlocs?
Honestly, I just wanted freedom, freedom from constantly adding hair to my head and feeling like my natural hair wasn’t enough. Microlocs felt like the perfect way to embrace my natural texture in a way that fits my lifestyle and the season I’m in.
What’s your go-to-hairstyle?
Any style that is away from my face for an everyday wear.
How do you maintain your locs and what products do you use regularly?
Wash: Clarifying shampoo once a month.
Wash: Cleansing / hydrating shampoo every week.
Conditioner: I don’t use conditioner.
Retie: Every 6-8 weeks depending on growth and workload.
Moisturise: I use an oil mix on my scalp and hair twice a week.
Favourite product: At the moment it’s the Shea Moisture Strengthen and Restore Shampoo. I use this as a clarifying shampoo once a month.
What do you love most about your locs and why?
What I love most about my microlocs is the growth, both of my hair and myself. I love the versatility, the endless styling options, and the transformation that comes with the journey. Since loc’ing my hair, I haven’t felt the need to add extensions, not because there’s anything wrong with them, but because my goal was freedom, and I’m living that out. I’ve made mistakes along the way, but each one has taught me something and guided me toward better care and deeper appreciation of my natural hair.
What has been the biggest challenge or adjustment?
Initially, it was adjusting to a more tender scalp.
What’s something you wish you knew before getting loc’d?
Avoid tight or high-tension styles both before and after starting your loc journey.
What advice would you give someone considering installing Sisterlocks or microlocs?
Absolutely do it! The loc journey is such a beautiful, holistic experience, it’s about more than just hair. It’s growth, patience, freedom, and self-acceptance all in one.
