Describe your hair before getting microlocs.
My natural hair before starting my microlocs journey, which was my second loc journey, was a TWA (teeny weeny afro). I cut off my first set of locs after suffering from alopecia due to stress in my life at the time.
What hairstyles did you used to wear the most before getting microlocs?
Before initially starting my loc journeys, I always used to wear my loose natural hair in two-strand twists all the time. I had known for about 6 years that I wanted to get locs and wearing my hair in two-strand twists solidified the decision for me before taking the plunge.
“As a loose natural I could probably count how many times I tried the wash and go. I have to say, one of the things I love about my locs is that my hair is ALWAYS done, even when it’s not lol. Let’s talk about the everyday shake and go. ”
What made you decide to install microlocs?
I've truly always been a lazy natural. Though I loved my loose natural hair, I know that my heart always desired having locs. It was just a matter of time before I started the journey. Even though my first set suffered a set back and wasn’t what I had wanted in terms of size, I still loved and embraced the journey. So as soon as my hair started growing back, the only thing that made sense was to restart my loc journey. This time with more patience and research under my belt. I was able to find a loctician, turned friend who understood and listened to what I wanted during my consultation and I've never looked back since. This loc journey has taught me so much and instilled in me a new level of self love that I didn't know was possible. I love the hair freedom that comes with having locs, and knowing that on any given day my hair will always be done. Whether I have a fresh retie or not. It's more than just a loc journey, it's a love letter to yourself, that comes with a lot of self discovery. I love it here!!!
What’s your go-to-hairstyle?
My signature hairstyle is the half, up half down style, but for the most part, true to being a lazy natural - I tend to leave my locs alone to do what they want.
How do you maintain your locs and what products do you use regularly?
I get my reties every 7 weeks. I wash my locs as needed depending on how active I've been in the gym. Sometimes I'll wash my hair weekly, sometimes bi-weekly. I experiment with shampoos at times (mostly when my staple has run out) but for the most part my holy grail shampoo is the Head and Shoulders 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner. When it comes to oils, I oil my hair once a week, twice a week in the winter using mainly, avocado oil, jojoba oil, peppermint oil or olive oil, nothing too heavy. Outside of this, I'll spritz my locs as needed either with rose water or normal water.
What do you love most about your locs and why?
As a loose natural I could probably count how many times I tried the wash and go. I have to say, one of the things I love about my locs is that my hair is ALWAYS done, even when it's not lol. Let's talk about the everyday shake and go. I'm also not spending a lot of money on products like I had to in the past - less is definitely more with locs.
What has been the biggest challenge or adjustment?
My biggest challenge came at the initial stages where my locs experienced a lot of slippage and marrying at the roots. This was mainly my fault because I didn't really follow the rules that I was expected to follow, such as braiding or banding my locs on wash days - whoops! I also lost a loc due to thinning caused by tight hairstyles and stretching my locs prematurely.
What’s something you wish you knew before getting loc’d?
DO YOUR RESEARCH! I wish I had done more research ahead of starting my loc journey. This would have helped me choose the right loctician in the first instance and be more informed and if I’m being transparent, also saved me some money. Low maintenance doesn't mean no maintenance.
What advice would you give someone considering installing Sisterlocks or microlocs?
To do as much research as possible and understand the reasons that they want locs. Often times we see people restarting their journeys because of reasons such as, lack of knowledge, not understanding which starter method would be best for your hair or thinking your locs will look exactly like someone else's. It's okay to have a loc inspiration, but it's important to remember that the journey is yours and no one else's. Not everyone's hair will go at the same pace but trust the process, it will definitely be worth it.
