Describe your hair before getting microlocs.
I had natural hair prior to getting locs. I did a big chop in 2021 and went completely bald to regrow my hair. It was severely damaged prior to getting locs.
What hairstyles did you used to wear the most before getting microlocs?
I mostly wore braids and wigs. I work in a factory so maintaining my natural hair was very difficult under the PPE I have to wear during my shift.
“There is so much hair freedom that comes with locs! I no longer have to worry how to style my hair for events or vacation. Locs brought out my most authentic version of me.”
What made you decide to install microlocs?
I was tired of wearing wigs and braids. I wanted to see what my hair was truly capable of in loc form. I also feel this was the best choice for my lifestyle considering the type of work I do.
What’s your go-to-hairstyle?
Half up, half down.
How do you maintain your locs and what products do you use regularly?
I get reties every 6-8 weeks.
I wash every two weeks, depending on my level of activity or how hot my work environment is.
I have color-treated hair so I deep condition every 4 weeks and also use a leave-in conditioner. I tend to use Olaplex for washing needs, but as of lately I’ve been using the Matrix Food for Soft products for the 1st wash. I alternate between a clarifying shampoo and other hydrating products.
What do you love most about your locs and why?
There is so much hair freedom that comes with locs! I no longer have to worry how to style my hair for events or vacation. Locs brought out my most authentic version of me .
What has been the biggest challenge or adjustment?
My biggest challenge has been maintaining my locs around the perimeter. Because the texture around my perimeter is so fine, they are harder to maintain and easy to break.
What’s something you wish you knew before getting loc’d?
How much finer I would be because the glow up is real!
What advice would you give someone considering installing Sisterlocks or microlocs?
Truly learn what products work best for your hair. I suggest learning what your porosity is prior to getting locs. Using the wrong products throughout your loc journey will cause damage later down the line.
Shout out your loctician! Who does your reties today?
I’d like to shoutout Abigail Sweene @hair_freedomm my consultant and loctician!
