Number of Locs: I never counted my locs due to me never truly having the desire to count them. I always wanted to be free of the hassle of the work to count them. I tried once to count and lost count. It appeared that I had 500.

Describe your hair before getting microlocs.

Before I got locs I was natural. I did get perms way before going natural. I had a tapered cut, but my hair was thick.

What hairstyles did you used to wear the most before getting microlocs?

I loved wearing braids and crochet! I was able to learn how to crochet my own hair with kinky hair.

I love the fact that I can just get up every morning and walk out the door and even if I’m not feeling my 100% best, my locs make me feel beautiful.

What made you decide to install microlocs?

I had brain surgery in 2016 and 2019 and am still healing. During this time I had my hair shaved multiple times. I was tired of getting perms, which resulted in me wanting to explore the most feasible and least stressful hairstyle. Locs were it! I didn’t want traditional locs, but Sisterlocks. They were unique, small, versatile, and they worked for my incision where my surgery was. I never looked back.

What’s your go-to-hairstyle?

My go to hairstyles are (1) a part in the middle with my hair down, or (2) wearing a really cute headband. Sometimes I like to put my hair in a ponytail using a silk scrunchie.

How do you maintain your locs and what products do you use regularly?

When I first started with Sisterlocks, I always got my re-tightening every four weeks. Then I switched over to six weeks, then eight weeks. Due to work, life, and juggling many things, I now go up to eight weeks for my retightening, and sometimes in all honesty, it can go up to nine weeks. It is not always recommended to do that, but that is why I always make sure in between those re-tightening, I keep my hair washed weekly and I don’t do any tight hairstyles.

My favorite hair care products are RAW Sugar, a deep cleansing based shampoo. It really helps with removing all the toxins and buildup in the hair. I also like to follow some of my favorite loc influencers on Instagram, who like to make their DIY hair products, which have helped me make my own shampoos. Every day, I spray my hair with rosewater, from Altea Organics. I stray away from using oils in my hair to not cause too much buildup. The only time I will put oil in my hair is when I have just finished washing my locs and I use vitamin E oil the following day of the wash.

What do you love most about your locs and why?

I love the fact that I can just get up every morning and walk out the door and even if I’m not feeling my 100% best, my locs make me feel beautiful. I don’t have to worry about if I’m going to put my hair up or down or clip it up. I can easily take it out of a satin bonnet, put apart in the middle or no part. Or put a headband, or no headband, and I can walk down the street and still receive compliments, or no compliments, because the true beautification is knowing that my Sisterlocks are versatile.

What has been the biggest challenge or adjustment?

My biggest adjustment or challenge since getting locs has been time. And it really has nothing to do with my loctician in a sense, it’s just life in general and sometimes we just can’t fight it and you just have to adjust with the schedule that you have. And I realize that if you allow stress to overwhelm you, the stress impacts your locs. That is why I do not allow anything to overwhelm me really, because it will be seen through my hair.

What’s something you wish you knew before getting loc’d?

Always do as much research as possible when finding a loctician, only because I went through three locticians before finding my final one.

What advice would you give someone considering installing Sisterlocks or microlocs?

My advice to anyone considering installing Sisterlocks or microlocs is to know your why. The reasoning as to why you are choosing microlocs or Sisterlocks or any type of loc in general is important. Some people may want to get locs because they see it’s beautiful on someone else, but then when it’s installed on them, they may not like it. Explore, research, watch videos, talk to other men and / or women to hear their stories about the time and effort it took them to grow their locs that long. Because, everyone has a different story and not everyone’s journey with their locs is going to be the same. Time, efficiency, money goes into our locs.
